Free tool · Meta length checker
Titles and descriptions that don't get cut off.
Paste your meta title and description to see the length, the optimum range, and exactly how far off you are.
Search engines cut off by pixel width, not characters, so the preview trims text the same way. They may also rewrite titles and descriptions.
The ranges we check against
Within range means the full text shows in results, with enough room to say something useful.
Title: 50–60 characters
Up to about 580 pixels on desktop. Put the main keyword first and the brand name last.
Description: 140–160 characters
Up to about 920 pixels on desktop. Mobile shows less, so put the key point and call to action early.
Deviation
How many characters you are under or over the range. Zero means you are inside it; the ideal length is the middle of the range.
Questions about meta tags
Why do you show pixel width as well as characters?
Search engines trim titles and descriptions by how wide the text is on screen, not by character count. Wide letters like W and M use more space than i or l, so two titles with the same character count can be cut off differently.
Is a title over 60 characters bad for rankings?
Not directly. The risk is that the end gets cut off with "…", so the searcher may not see your brand or the most persuasive part. Staying in range keeps the full message visible.
Why does Google sometimes show a different title or description?
Google can rewrite them when it thinks other text on the page better matches the search. Well-written tags in the right range are more likely to be used as written.
Should every page have a unique title and description?
Yes. Duplicate tags make it harder for search engines to tell pages apart and give searchers less reason to click a specific page.
What about mobile?
Mobile results usually show less of the description, so put the most important words and your call to action in the first 120 characters or so.
